Employment Security Vetting
For UK employment there are standards and guidelines such as BPSS and BS7858:2006 which specify the appropriate level of screening required. Depending on the type of employment different standards for security vetting may apply.
The BS7858:2006 standard is applied mainly to the commercial sector and more specifically those companies that provide services directly related to security, examples are:
- Security guards
- Secure waste disposal
- Alarm installation and maintenance
For any relevant employment within the above functions the BS 7858:2006 standard will apply. As to what constitutes relevant employment the screening standard is quite wide ranging and includes any employee whose employment involves the acquisition of, or access to, equipment or information, which could place the organisation or its client in a situation of security risk.

The BPSS standard is applied mainly to the public sector, but there are occasions where employment within the private sector also requires this level of screening. Examples of where BPSS is applied:
- Civil servants
- Armed forces members
- Government contractors
- Temporary staff employed with any of the above
- Supply chain companies (where requested)
BPSS checks are sometimes requested through the supply chain; if a company tenders for work to supply a prime contractor to the government there will often be a requirement to ensure the company has its staff screened to the minimum BPSS requirements.
Unlike BS7858:2006 the BPSS standard has higher associated levels of screening depending on the type of employment and the level of security clearance required. The higher levels of screening (that is CTC, SC, and DV) can only be conducted with specific authorisation from an approved (List X) contractor or from the sponsoring government department.
